Awhina Haring knows nothing is more healing and powerful than the koru pattern. For over three decades, the well-known Auckland fabric artist has screenprinted her own koru designs. Her Koru Design stall at Otara Markets is popular for the korowai, cloaks, kaftans, tops and bags that she sells.
Yet ever since Awhi first moved to Aotearoa from Holland at the age of 33 to live at Te Hui Rangiora marae in Kirikiriroa, she has always known that the koru had more to give. That's why she's set up Koru Design printing. This part of the business empowers Māori artists with the tools and support networks they need to bring their koru designs to the world. At a fraction of what it would normally cost to produce their own work.
"When we work with it in our own designs, the koru gives us the power to change the world," explains Awhina. "The koru connects us to our wairua."
